Shakespeare: why read him or even try to learn from his style?

I've noticed the same thing. I really wish that i could understand it because i'm sure he was a theatrical genius. Lately i've related a general people's praise of Shakespeare to that of The Emperor's New Clothes. All of the king's servants and family praised the clothing (which they couldn't even seen) for fear of being looked at as stupid. Apparently i have no problem seeming stupid, i still just can't see those clothes (understand shakespeare enough to praise it)
