Is it ok if I ask my bridal party to pay for their own attire?

The bridesmaid dresses I have found are around $325 before alterations, shoes, and jewelry. I have a year to plan my wedding, and this is just one thing I have a concern about. I did not know if this amount was too much for them to pay, along with accessories? The groomsmen will be wearing a suit, and not a tux.
