Is there such a thing as Temporary loss of muscle in COPD ?
Muscle wasting is a common problem in patients who have been hospitalized for an extended period of time. It is even more common in ICU patients. Immobility causes wasting of muscle (disuse atrophy). Completely bedbound patients may lose up to 10% of their muscle m per week! Another somewhat preventable reason is critical illness polyneuropathy and myopathy (CIP & CIM). Patients receiving steroids are at higher risk of developing this disorder. Unfortunately, the only treatment is supportive care. Lastly, certain patient factors such as old age and other chronic diseases (such as COPD) can prolong hospitalization and increase the risks of complications.
