Can a kitten of 3 months old be left out to fend for itself?

I took a kitten in cos it followed me from, i dunno where. Didn't know what to do with it so i fed it, bathed it and took care of it for a month and a half. Even took it to the vet for deworming. My housemates agreed to it at first but now one of them says she's afraid of it. Therefore i need to let it go. Would really like to know if it can fend for itself outside. I live in a tropical country, and there are a lot of healthy surviving stray cats around. They all look fat and well fed cos there are local restaurants around the area.
