My car shuts off?

my 200 oldsmobile intrigue shuts off. First it kinda studders and then it shuts off and have trouble starting agin. Someone said it was the ignition coil. I personally think its the fuel filter cause as far as my knowledge, the ignition coil (which the car has 2) would judt stop and not turn on or off in intervals. any advice?
