Is there such a thing as good and evil?

With all the debates about torture and whether it is keeping America safe. and the constant slaughtering of people just to achieve an end of peace..Is there such a thing as good? Is there such a thing as evil? I truly believe that both are capable of doing either one. Or are we just fabricating such a character trait to make ourselves seem significant? The "us versus them" mentality.
