Computer not recognizing iPod?

I have my iPod nano (3rd gen) connected to my usb but it isn't registering with my computer. Typically, the green icon shows up in the toolbar at the bottom right hand but it is not. It also will not connect to iTunes. I did a diagnostics check and it says it recognizes the usb but no iPod is connected. Help!
